My Garage Door Jammed the Morning the Temperature Dropped — Here's the One Thing I Wish I'd Known

I pressed the button on my garage door opener like I have a thousand times before. Nothing. Not a groan, not a click — just silence and a door that wouldn’t move an inch.

This was the same door that worked perfectly fine when I pulled in the night before. I checked the obvious things first: power was on, the wall button didn’t work either, and the manual release handle wouldn’t budge more than a quarter-inch before something stopped it cold.

The temperature had dropped to 19°F overnight — the first hard freeze of the season. That was the only thing that had changed.

I grabbed a flashlight and crouched down to look at the tracks and springs. Everything looked normal. No broken cables, no visible damage, nothing out of place. The door was just locked in position, as if someone had welded it shut while I slept.

It took me three days of searching forums and trying random fixes before I learned what actually happened. And when I finally figured it out, the solution was almost embarrassingly simple.
