I Repainted My Bathroom Ceiling Three Times Before I Found the Real Problem

The Tape Test

A contractor friend came by to help me hang a new light fixture. When I mentioned the ceiling nightmare, he didn’t even look up at the fresh paint.

“Do the tape test first,” he said.

The what?

He told me to grab a roll of duct tape, press a six-inch strip firmly onto a clean, dry patch of ceiling, smooth it down hard with my thumb, then rip it off fast. Like waxing your leg, but angrier. He made a quick yanking motion with his fist.

If the paint came off on the tape, he explained, the problem wasn’t my top coat. It wasn’t moisture. It wasn’t prep or technique.

It was adhesion. The paint wasn’t sticking to what was underneath it.

I’d been repainting a surface that couldn’t hold paint in the first place. Every new coat was doomed before I opened the can.

I found a spot that looked perfect—smooth, dry, freshly painted two weeks earlier. No bubbles, no peeling, no warning signs. I pressed a strip of tape down, smoothed it from the center outward to get rid of air bubbles, counted to ten, and yanked hard in one motion.

The strip came away clean on one edge. But the other half? Covered in a thin layer of paint that peeled off like plastic wrap. Not dust or texture—an intact film of paint, still flexible, still in one piece. It had separated from the ceiling without any effort at all.

I stared at it. The paint on the tape felt weird. Not chalky or powdery like old latex that’s breaking down. Slick, almost waxy. Smooth in a way that didn’t match the flat ceiling paint I’d used.

I did the test in three more spots. One came away clean. The other two pulled paint off just like the first.

So it was inconsistent, which explained why the peeling kept showing up in random places. Some areas were holding, some weren’t, and I had no idea why.

What the hell was under there? And why was it only failing in patches?
